The Chinese in British Columbia

Hi Class,

Today we finished studying our last topic of the year!!! Wooohoooo!!! Today's lesson was about the Chinese in British Columbia and their experiences on the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Please spend some time browsing the pages of "The Ties That Bind" website. Go through all of the pages and check out the videos and images.

Complete the following questions with a partner:

  1. Who were the Chinese railroad workers?
  2. What was life like for the Chinese railroad workers during the railway building period and afterwards
  3. What challenges did the Chinese railroad workers experience? What about their descendants’ challenges?
  4. How did the Chinese railroad workers and their descendants help shape British Columbia and Canada?

Hi Class,

Today we will spend some time looking in to the important people and events of the Cariboo Gold Rush. Go to the following website:
  1. Spend some time reading through the variuos pages of the site.
  2. Once you have spent about 10 minutes or so browsing the website, head to the "Teacher's Corner" page.
  3. Go to the Grade 10 lessons and select either Lesson 2 or Lesson 3.
    •  If you choose Lesson 2 you may only do Option B.
  4. NB - The maximum mark possible for Lesson 2 is a "B" or 85%. The maximum mark possible for Lesson 3 is an "A" or 100%.

Government and your rights!

Today we worked on understanding our rights and freedoms. We learned that we have certain rights and freedoms that are protected by law in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms (part of the Canadian Constitution). For homework complete:

    • Brainstorm reasons why fewer people in the province are casting their ballot.
    • Is this decline disrespectful to those who had to fight for their right to vote?
